The synQ (read 'sync') collective came into being back in August of 2007 as three individuals got together to jam at the campus radio station's studio on borrowed time... It was a typical weekend afternoon at the National University of Singapore (NUS) when three undergraduates; Buddhima Kurukulasuriya, Muhammad Arif Rahman and Khairudeen Abu Bakar decided to stir up a storm in the school's music scene. A bedroom DJ since the early 2000s, Khairudeen (DJ Krumbs) specialises in Hip-Hop, R&B and Breakbeats. But what started off in the confines of his own four walls, DJ Krumbs is now managed by Bedsty Music and spins regularly at popular local nightspots such as BluJaz and Stereolounge. Similarly, Arif (Mixfit Rif) also started mixing and scratching in the confines of his own bedroom before making his foray into the local and also global scene such as Copenhagen, Bali and Taiwan. And finally, there was Buddhi (formally Neoflava). Although his begins are not within the analog tools of a conservative DJ, he was (and still is) one of synQ's digital DJing maestros. Starting off on the shores of Sri Lanka, he moved onto make waves in Singapore as well with regular nights with a fellow synQ member, Vasu (Vu), at SupperClub and Attica Singapore, to name a few. The three founders of synQ started off as individuals who organized jamming sessions just to have fun and learn from each other. After many hours of mixing and experimentation, they decided to form the first live DJ collective in the school... Hence, synQ was born. They kicked off by organizing parties for the student body (starting with CLIQ, in collaboration with Home Club and Radio Pulze) which attracted much attention from the masses. Slowly, the students' interest in DJing grew and with the inclusion of notable DJs in the local scene such as Kan Chee Hoo (CheeWho?) and Roy Chan (DJ Elctrbst), synQ DJs decided to conduct courses for those who are truly interested in music and mixing. Up till the dawn of 2011, we are proud to have produced several passionate and talented DJs who had their DJ courses with synQ. One of whom is Justin Ong (θ23) who placed himself 2nd Runner-Up in the 2009 Pioneer Digital DJ Battle, after only a year and a half of mixing. Unknowingly in 2010, synQ also recruited Derrick Foo (DJ Motif) who had placed himself 1st Runner-Up in the 2009 Singapore DMC battle and went on to represent Singapore for the DMC World Finals in London. As the crew's diverse roster continues to grow and more passionate individuals in NUS and out of campus are recruited, the synQ DJs continue their (r)evolution, and have moved out and beyond the walls of pure live DJing. It is this art form of DJing that draws us together -- its varied sounds, instrumentalisms, styles, techniques and everything rhythmic in between. We are brought together by our insatiable passion for DJing and pushing its limits and above all, for the music that moves us and shapes us. We now make ourselves known as the synQ Music Collective. If you are truly interested in mixing and sharing your musical passion with us, do drop us a line! We are always happy to meet more people. |
